American Cheese Doesn’t Appeal to Millennial Tastes

U.S. sales of processed cheese are projected to drop 1.6 percent in 2018 as millennials seek fancier cheeses with less preservatives, according to Euromonitor International. This is the fourth straight year of decline for American cheese brands like Kraft Singles and Velveeta, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Decline is also evident when looking at the manufacturing landscape. The number of U.S. cheese factories increased 40 percent between 2000 and 2017, but the growth is from small, specialty cheesemakers, says Matt Gould, editor at Dairy & Food Market Analyst.

Though 40 percent of U.S. households buy Kraft Singles, overall sales are flat, according to the company’s general manager of cheese and dairy. Kraft is investing in research and development to get American cheese into more homes, offering qualities that more natural cheeses can’t, such as the ability to melt, according to the report. Full Story
